It ́s All in the Details

Its all in the details: They say Pueblo Magico but what is it that makes it so magical? So many things…where do I start?

Todos Santos acquired its notoriety as a sugar production town many years ago and, on this basis, the story began. Over the years artists from all over the world discovered the pure light, dazzling oceanscapes and magnificent vistas beckoning them to embrace en plein air, and the charm of a dusty Mexican pueblo.

Painted street signs for Sierra Vista, Calle Damiana, and Guayparín in Todos Santos.

And it was charming in its small-town way. Mom and pop stores, multi-generations of families with ancestors who were once pirates, wild horses claiming their right to the kilometers of open space and hectares of farmland with bountiful crops that fed the populace and provided income for many of the families.

As the pueblo grew and development spilled over to the north of town, along came scattered homes forming a general plan of development. Farmland was sold off and divided into parcels, expatriates put down stakes and began to make Todos Santos home.

Street signs for Arroyo Escondido, Calle Alki, and Camino Los Torotes among palm trees.

Fittingly, the streets were named by inspiration. Flora, fauna, sea-life, wildlife, mother nature, man-made landmarks and such all laid their claim to tiny caminos leading to hidden homes along the way.

And the local artists were inspired to create! Street signs began popping up on corners begging for you to turn here or go there! Follow me, they said, and discover a canopy of mango trees embracing the dusty path, a 360-degree view of both the Sierra de La Laguna mountains and the magnificent Pacific coastline or a meandering dirt road leading to a pristine stretch of beach.

Outdoor signs for Cañon del Gato and Bocanas de las Dunas, with an arrow pointing left.

Why not make a day of it? A gentrified treasure hunt, if you will.

Pack a picnic lunch with amazing bread from the French bakers at Chez Laura, savory cheeses and sausage provided by La Popular, a bottle of Mexican wine from Amor d’Vino and a basket of the freshest, sweetest local strawberries found at Agricole in the farming town of El Pescadero. Grab a blanket and head out on a voyage of discovery!
